A thousand years ago, the young son of a nobleman fell for an even younger girl. She was bright, beautiful and praised as someone full of life. Sadly, their blossoming love was not as simple as it appeared; for the man’s brother also fancied her.

In time Niklaus and his brother, Kol came to blows over the girl, an event that split the family and threatened to tear it apart. Their mother, a powerful witch by name of Esther, forbade the girl, Caroline from entering their home in an effort to end the feud. For awhile the plan appeared to work, Kol graciously -and uncharacteristically- yielded to Niklaus, allowing the elder to court and eventually win over Caroline’s heart.

…Shortly after, all hell broke loose

Niklaus and Kol’s youngest brother was killed by a werewolf, an event that drove their parents over the edge. For Mikael and Esther had already lost one child and had never planned to bury another. With that, the ball was set in motion. Esther cast a spell to protect her children, unaware that doing so would reveal a terrible secret –Niklaus was not Mikael’s son. His true father, was in fact one of the werewolf villagers, though Esther refused to name who. Attempting to right her past sin, the witch bound Niklaus’ werewolf side and turned her back on him; though not before also turning Caroline.

That however, didn’t soothe Niklaus’ anger. One night, while the others were out feeding, he returned to their home and attacked Esther; effectively leaving her to die. In a twist of fate Mikael returned home in time, feeding Esther his blood and managing to turn her. At the same time, Niklaus discovered Caroline and helped her through the transition process. None of the siblings ever the wiser that their mother was in fact still alive –as Niklaus believed her to be dead, and also blamed the action on Mikael.

Life continued on until a two centuries later where Niklaus found the wrong side of a witch again. Though rather than kill him -for she believed death would be too kind- the witch placed a curse on Caroline.

The blonde vampire would be forced to die however Caroline and Niklaus would be unaware of when. The end of her life would come about either by her own hand or that of another, and be forced to start life again with her memories wiped clean.

So far the cycle has come to pass twice – The first of her two deaths came about in 1922 where Caroline, after a witch, Gloria takes a liking to her and convinces her manager to allow Caroline the chance to sing alongside her which later led to her death.
The last being a hundred years ago where an intruder made his way into the New Orleans quarter and stabbed Caroline repeatedly leaving her with life threatening injuries, her death following soon after.

Each death became harder than the last for Niklaus, as he blames himself for each death, but still cannot bring himself to leave her.
